The same English personal pronoun can be rendered into different Vietnamese personal pronouns. In the translation of “The Hottest Night of the Century”, four different ways of translating the English third person personal pronoun “he” have been provided: “ông”, “ông ta”, “nó”, and “thầy”. Other personal pronouns have been translated in a similar manner. So, what is the translator’s implication? What is the basis for his choice of Vietnamese personal pronouns? This paper intends to elaborate varied ways of translating the same English personal pronoun into Vietnamese from linguistic pragmatics approaches.Việc dịch đại từ nhân xưng tiếng Anh sang tiếng Việt luôn thu hút được sự quan tâm của các dịch giả, độc giả và các nhà nghiên cứu. Cùng một đại từ nhân xưng tiếng Anh có thể chuyển ngữ thành các đại từ nhân xưng khác nhau trong tiếng Việt. Trong bản dịch truyện ngắn “Đêm nóng nhất thế kỷ”, với cùng một đại từ nhân xưng tiếng Anh ngôi thứ ba “he”, dịch giả đã đưa ra bốn phương án khác nhau: lúc là “ông”, lúc là “ông ta”, lúc là “nó”, lúc lại là “thầy”. Tương tự như vậy với các đại từ nhân xưng tiếng Anh khác trong truyện. Vậy, ẩn ý của dịch giả ở đây là gì? Cái gì là cơ sở cho việc chọn đại từ nhân xưng tiếng Việt của dịch giả?
