| Tóm tắt: | My graduation thesis namely “A study on syntactic and semantic features of sports newspaper headlines in English with reference to the Vietnamese equivalence” involves the comparative study of the syntactic and semantic features of headlines in general and conceptual simile in sports newspaper headlines in particular.
In this study, the descriptive, contrastive, quantitative, linguistic methods are used for finding out the syntactic characteristics of sports newspaper headlines containing conceptual simile in English and Vietnamese.
The findings of the study showed that sports newspaper headlines containing conceptual simile can share common structure and common semantic features of English headlines, but may have different syntactic features that reflect various meanings depending on the situation in which they are used. Based on the results of the survey, common errors made by English learners are found out. In addition, this study also offers some implications which could be beneficial for teaching and learning English idioms more effectively.
