Tóm tắt: | This study aims at applying the two theories on critical discourse analysis by
Fairclough and the systemic functional grammar by M.A.K Halliday to analyze
the inaugural speeches in 2009 and 2013 by President Barack Obama. The study
is analyzed basing on Fairclough’s theory which including three main stages:
description, interpretation and explanation of which covering many aspects of
grammar and vocabulary such as modality, cohesive devices, etc. which are found
on the two speeches. The description deals with vocabulary, grammatical,
transitivity, thematization and macrostructure. In terms of vocabulary, the
discourse has a clear classification scheme presented by the speaker. In terms of
grammatical features, the power and ideology of the President could be
transferred through his creative utterances.
As a result, the author found what strategies and how it applies into the two
speeches to get the ideas of speaker across. |
