Tóm tắt:This study is concerned with English and Vietnamese non-count nouns in the Cable News Network and in the Nhan Dan Newspaper. The purposes of this research are to understand and analyze the similarities and differences between English and Vietnamese in terms of non-count nouns, together with the transivity from and to countable nouns of these non-count nouns. The research also seeks for significance in the characterisation of each language and countability format of chosen words to describe the implications of the analysis. This study is conducted by applying descriptive, analytic and statistical methods. There are 8 posts with 4 posts on each newpaper. All the considered characteristics are found in Chapter 2, which are characteristics of count nouns, non-count nouns, groups of special words with the availability of both countable and uncountable formats. With the specific examples of non-count nouns in the English and Vietnamese newspapers, the results of data analysis will demonstrate the similarities and differences in using non-count nouns in terms of overall structures, lexical choice and syntax. The result of the analysis is catergoried into 4 main groups, including Drink/Food substаncеs аnd sеrvings, Foods аnd vаriеtiеs, Аnimаls аnd food and Аbstrаcts аnd еvеnt instаntiаtions/ results, and all of groups are analyzed in both Cable News Network and Nhan Dan newspaper. As a consequence, all of chosen words among 4 groups expressing both count and non-count meaning, given their appearance of non-count format. In addition, the result also presents the occurrences of process types with each of the 4 group in the chapter. These matters are carefully discussed in Chapter 4 of the study. The findings of the study can, to some extent, be used as some suggestions for language learners to explore and understand more about linguistic features of countability in both English and Vietnamese. Besides, linguistics researchers of Countability in both English and Vietnamese can conduct further study on the similar topics to investigate another aspects of the issue.
