Tóm tắt:As the title indicates this study is aimed at investigating syntactic and pragmatic features of wh-questions in English. The study deals with three points: (1) investigating the forms of wh-questions in two novels: The Golden Bowl and Lord of the Flies, (2) discovering the pragmatic features of wh-questions in the stories and (3) examining mistakes made by students in using English wh-questions as well as providing some recommendations for teaching, learning and translating of wh-questions into target language. This study was designed as a descriptive survey method, comparative and contrastive method. According to the data analysis, the result of the study shows that each form of wh-question in the novels shares different syntactic and pragmatic features as has been described in grammar book. In syntactic field, wh-question has ten basic forms that are popular in most of communication cases and books and these ten forms present all proper features of interrogative sentence in English. In specific stories, wh-questions have many communicate functions that utter speakers’ attitude. The author discussed each specific feature of wh-questions in chapter 4 of the study. Basing on syntactic and pragmatic features of wh-question, the study was designed to find out common mistakes of student in using English wh-questions. The author of the study gave out some implications for learners, teachers and translators in learning, teaching and translating wh-questions in order to avoid making mistakes.
