It was built in the Ly dynasty and extended with a large scale in the Tran dynasty period and became a chief centre of Truc Lam Zen school as well as the greatest base for publishing religious books. In the seventeenthe century (the Le - Trinh dynastiesperiod), the pagoda was reconstructed, endorsed and maintained until the twentieth century (1947) and was considered to be a general headquarters of Buddhism and concurrently royal palace of the Tran family, which was one of the greatest religious centre in old Thang Long Imperial city. From 2002 to 2004, the Museum of Vietnamese History conducted an excavation at the site of Bao An pagoda on the area of 500m2 in order to search for traces of old Bao An pagoda. The found architectural remains show that in the depth from 1.2m to 1.6m, Le dynasty period architectural relics were found with rich artifacts such as building materials (bricks, tiles), decorative earthen materials, ceramics and porcelain from the Tran - Le period.
